CHAPTER FOURTEEN

It was Saturday and Karson decided to go to Adam’s softball game. She invited Eysha and Mari and the three of them approached the little table set up at the entrance of the ball fields. Tickets were eight dollars but the taker was a friend of Karson’s. Megan Stillwater was a few years older but the two had become acquainted because of their partners’ profession. Samuel Stillwater was a contractor who worked with Adam on occasion. The two couples had had dinner together one night when Megan and Samuel’s son, Aiden, stayed at a friend’s house.

Karson introduced Eysha and Mari. Megan allowed them all to enter for free. Aiden ran up to the small table set directly in the middle of the path and begged his mother for money to buy a Snickers bar. A small group of preteens stood behind him. All of them were sweaty and sprinkled with the red dirt of a baseball diamond. Karson and her friends went down the path towards the softball field as Megan fetched her purse. Karson said goodbye but she knew the mother didn’t notice.

Adam and his team, The Han Solo Home Runs, warmed up down the right field baseline. Adam noticed his girlfriend then ran to the aluminum bleachers as the women found a seat between other fans.

“Hey, babe. Ready to watch some All-Stars?”

Karson said, “Sure.” She looked behind Adam then around Mari’s shoulder then glanced to another field with her hand shadowing her eyes. “But where are they?”

“Funny, funny,” Adam said with a smile. “We should beat this team by ten.”

“Don’t miss anymore pop flies.”

“I won’t as long as you cheer for me. Good to see you invited some cheerleaders.”

Eysha cut her eyes at Adam. “Just because I’m a woman doesn’t mean I can’t do anything except yell and shake some pompoms. I can play softball better than most of the men on that field.”

“She’s right,” Karson said and tipped Adam’s baseball cap. “She played volleyball in college but she also got softball scholarships too.”

“Got an extra glove?” Eysha asked.

Adam blushed and stumped for words. “Oh, well, it’s a men’s league.”

Eysha shrugged in an arrogant way then pouted. “Too bad. You could have had a real All-Star on your team.”

The women laughed except for Mari. “I’m glad it’s men only,” she said, scoping the field as the players warmed up. “That guy” - she pointed near the fence - “the one with the blue cleats, is he single?”

Adam turned. “Rick?”

“Is Rick the one with the tight ass?”

All the women laughed this time. Adam didn’t. “What about him?”

“He single?”

A beautiful woman with straight black hair whipped around and thrust her hand into Mari’s face. “No, he’s not.” On the woman’s finger was an opulent engagement ring.

This time Adam was the one with a case of giggles.

“Oops,” Mari said, then the three friends slid up one bench to create space from the angry woman. Mari whispered, “I can’t help it. I have a thing for baseball boys.”

Adam whispered, “So does this one,” then patted Karson’s leg.
